Congratulations on your acceptance letters! With the application process behind you, you now get to choose where you want to enroll. If you’re still deciding, many boarding schools hold events where admitted students and their families and return to campus to learn more, confirm their school choice, and get a deeper look at the boarding school community they ultimately decide to join.
What is a Second Visit Day?
A second visit day brings admitted students back to campus before they are required to make a final enrollment decision. (These days go by many names: spring visit days, revisit day, visit back days, second visit days… and many more!) Schools use these events to help you experience daily life more fully than you did during your initial tour. Most schools schedule them in late March or early April, so watch for invitations arriving with your admissions decisions.
Because this is one of your best chances to see whether a school truly fits you, approach the day intentionally so you leave with a clear sense of how well the school fits.
Go in with a Game Plan
Before you arrive, think about what really matters to you. Consider:
- The academic atmosphere. Ask yourself whether you’ll feel challenged. Does the academic environment seem collaborative and supportive? Does the school value the particular programs that interest you the most?
- Dorm life, dining, and community rules. Look closely at the routines and expectations. Consider how structured the evenings are, how flexible dining options are, and whether the rules match the level of independence you want.
- Sports, arts, or clubs you are passionate about. Ask about practice schedules, arts and performance opportunities, coaching styles, and how easy it is to join or start a club.
- Student independence. Investigate how freely students can move around campus, how sign‑in/out works, what weekends look like, and how much responsibility students have for managing their own time.
- Student culture. Watch how students interact when adults aren’t prompting them. Do they seem kind? Inclusive? Stressed? Relaxed? The social atmosphere will shape your daily life as much as academics.
Having a list of priorities helps you stay focused and helps you notice what aligns with your needs.
Ask Honest Questions
Current students will give you the most accurate picture of life at the school, so lean in and ask them about their experiences and opinions. (Their answers will reveal what brochures, websites, and official tours can’t!) Ask substantive questions that invite a lengthy and thoughtful response:
- “What’s something you wish you knew before coming here?”
- “What’s the hardest part about this school?”
- “How supportive are teachers when you’re struggling?”
- “How much free time do you actually get?”
- “What are your favorite parts about living/learning here?”
Look Closely at Dorm Life
Dorms shape much of your daily experience, so pay attention to the details. Watch how students use the space—whether common rooms feel lively or empty, whether doors stay open or closed, and whether students gather naturally or keep to themselves. Notice how clean the spaces are; look at the condition of the hallways, bathrooms, and shared areas. These observations can tell you a lot about how comfortable and social the living environment is.
Talk to Other Admitted Students
The students you meet during your revisit day may be your future classmates. Ask yourself if you see yourself fitting in with them, if your conversations feel natural. Can you imagine studying, living, and growing alongside these people? What’s the group dynamic like?
Our Last Best Advice
Attending a revisit day will help you confirm your decision of whether to attend a school or not. By seeing the school again, meeting with students and faculty, and asking important questions, you will feel more confident that the school is the right fit for you!
We’ve attended countless second visit days and there is one truism that links them all: it’s probably going to rain! 🙂 As you prepare for the day, make sure you’re dressed for the weather (especially your shoes) so that you can experience the day in comfort. And trust us: bring an umbrella!
